Also known as: The Band, Lap-Band®
It might be a sophisticated medical device, but the basic concept is easy to understand.
Our stomachs are large pouches that can normally hold a large volume of food. The gastric band looks like a small silicone bracelet that can be placed around the stomach to shape it into a gentle hourglass form. As food is swallowed, is has to pass through the narrowed portion of the stomach. Patients often feel full much sooner during meals. Less calories consumed can lead to more weight lost.
Modern gastric bands are also adjustable by adding and removing contained fluid, which means that bands can be easily tightened or loosened in the office if needed. The end result can be substantial weight loss and improvement of serious weight-related medical conditions.
Of the common bariatric surgeries, gastric banding is the only option that is adjustable and removable (if necessary).
